We are delighted to welcome you back to The Studio Morland for the launch and exhibition of Inspired by Lakeland’s new book ‘Through the Locking Glass - What Cumbrian artists did during lockdown’ - a 168-page book of illustration, print, fine art, poetry, photography and sculpture made by artists throughout the county.

From the 15th-30th August from 10am-4pm the Studio will be gently re-opening to the general public and inviting you through its doors once again. The exhibition features 80 artworks from the new publication with artists statements detailing how their lives and work changed during lockdown.

Publisher David Felton said: “The Coronavirus lockdown has been devastating to many Cumbrian artists and small businesses. At the same time, it has been a chance to slow down, reflect, and engage with a much smaller area around us. ‘Through the locking glass’ is an artistic response to these confined times, capturing a unique moment in human history. It has been the most inspiring project I have worked on. Even in the darkest of times Cumbrian artistic folk rose to the challenge of creating an extraordinary body of artwork – some of it heartbreaking, some of it challenging, some of it funny and much of it hopeful:

There will be a one-way system around the exhibition and through the studio, allowing for a natural flow through the space into the beautiful gardens behind for further exploration and to be surrounded by nature. Poetry from the book will be broadcast using a fantastic purpose-built sound installation sculpture.

Kate Brundrett, Director of The Studio Morland, said: ”We wanted our first event since lockdown to celebrate the talents of Cumbrian artists, but also create a gentler exhibition experience than usual for the many people making a first trip out. The one-way system will allow a natural flow through the space into the beautiful gardens behind, allowing for further exploration and to be surrounded by nature. Weekend performances and events will augment the exhibition.”

The book will be on sale throughout the exhibition and can also be purchased online at www.inspiredbylakeland.co.uk

Weekend performances and events will augment the exhibition:

22nd/23rd August: Dan Fox Sculptures and Sound Installations

29th/30th August: Dr Venetia Young - The Studio Morland’s new Dr in Residence - invites you to hear poetry and join in with conversations about Covid and healing through nature.
