A beautiful light studio venue in the stunning Eden Valley.

On 31st January 2025 the Studio Morland CIC closed.

After 8 years providing a ‘safe space for creative exploration’ our Community Interest Company ‘The Studio Morland CIC’ closed and the building returned to being ‘The Old School’.

Weekly sessions such as Pilates, Yoga, Sports Massage and South Baths will continue for the time being, and our funded projects such as Creative Cuppa, Creative Thinkers and the National Saturday Art Club will resume if a new fundraising organisation can project manage the programmes. We are deeply sorry for the impact this will have on our audiences - we know how vital those programmes have become to your wellbeing, connection and mental health and hope that a solution can be found to continue them.

A message from Kate:
“I would like to take this opportunity to express my thanks and gratitude to everyone who connect, supported and got involved in the Studio, for the artists, tutors and project managers, funders and volunteers - you’ve all made the space come to life - and for people who’ve travelled from miles away for talks and events - you made the events magic and memorable. I’d particularly like to thank Jessica Boatright for her incredible project management skills and dedication - she has been instrumental in the project delivery, our board of directors who are all wonderful people dedicated to changing lives through creativity, Nikki Dawson for her encouragement, belief and hard working in leading Light Up Morland, Kay for her wonderful ‘Warm Hub’ input and humour, our regular tutors - Andy, Phil, Amanda, Jerri who have been incredible supports and become good friends and finally to Jenny Brook for the inspiration, courage and shared bonkers-ness for taking it on in the first place.”

PRESS RELEASE: Closure of the studio morland

DATE: 31 JANUARY 20205

Friday 31st January will see the last event at The Studio Morland before it closes the doors on the Community Interest Company.

The event is the final ‘Creative Thinkers’ talk, part of series exploring all things art + the big topics in life. This week’s talk is  on art + wellbeing + leadership and will also celebrate 8 years at the The Studio Morland delivering arts and wellbeing sessions for local and visiting communities and “providing a safe space for creative exploration”.

The Studio was begun by artists Kate Gilman Brundrett and Jennifer Brook, who saw a wonderful opportunity to bring high quality arts to a rural community in 2017. It has since hosted a huge range of events from yoga and pilates to life drawing and disco, from exhibitions and talks to belly dancing and theatre shows, and from young people’s Art Clubs to monthly dementia friendly craft sessions.

As a community interest company it has engaged audiences from babies and school children to the WI and from business networks to circus and performance workshops. It has hosted seasonal performances from EVAN musicians and national storytellers through Highlights Rural Touring. It has held exhibitions of local artists in lockdown in ‘Through the Locking Glass’ and international networks of nature focussed organisations. It has fundraised and run many community events and celebrations such as the Jubiliee and Coronation workshops, and run a wonderful ACE funded light works festival - Light Up Morland over 2 years. It provided experimental art sessions for young people from Carlisle Youth Zone and impressed the High Sheriff of Cumbria enough to win a community award. One group visited each year travelling from Glasgow and Berlin to meet. And young carers and older carers have found support and companionship.

Founding Director Kate Brundrett said ‘I am so proud of what the studio has achieved over the years and which is all down to our small team and helpers. It’s provided a vital lifeline for people young and old who found a safe and welcoming space to be creative and feel alive, and some of the feedback of how the sessions have positively impacted and transformed some people’s lives are truly humbling.’

However like so many small organisations the future for the company is unsustainable.

Despite the company closing for now the building will remain open and available for hire. This also means the weekly sessions such as yoga and pilates, sports massage and sound baths will continue, and the space is available for rent.

Kate will independently continue to deliver business coaching sessions, company away days and other events at the space, as Kate Brundrett Associates, and anyone wishing to keep in touch future events can continue to do so through the existing website: www.thestudiomorland.co.uk

Friday’s event will ask the questions: What happens in the space between art + wellbeing + leadership? What is the purpose of art? How can leadership encompass arts, creativity and wellbeing? Where are the connections and how do they augment our journey to brilliance in our lives?

Creative Thinkers 2024 has been funded by the UK government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund through Westmorland & Furness Council.

The UK Shared Prosperity Fund aims to improve pride in place and increase life chances across the UK investing in communities and place, supporting local business, and people and skills.
